Another Reason to Take Your Probiotics 09/18/15

That’s Right!!! Here is another reason to take your Probiotics.  probiotic-1

Did you know that many restaurants use meat that contain antibiotics.  In fact a CNN is reporting that many of the top 25 restaurant chains in America have NO public policy to limit the use of antibiotics in their meat and poultry supply chains.  How does this affect you – the following image (taken from shows how antibiotics given to animals on a farm can make it into our human bodies.

When an antibiotic loses its ability to kill bacteria growth we say that that bacteria is resistant to the antibiotic.  Antibiotic resistance is a serious and is a public health issue.   Every year we are told of reports of “SUPERBUGS” that kill Americans because the bacteria is resistant to our current antibiotics and hospitals are constantly dealing with infections that are not responding to standard therapies.

Some of the reasons for antibiotic resistance include the over prescribing of antibiotics for illnesses such as the common cold or other viruses as well as administration of broad spectrum antibiotics to animals that are ultimately intended for human use.

Another consequence of consuming meat that has been given broad spectrum antibiotics is DYSBIOSIS.   Dysbiosis is the imbalance between good and bad bacteria in the intestinal tract.   Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria that makes us sick but they also kill the good bacteria that keeps us healthy.  Good bacteria or probiotics are essential for good health because they:

  • Help produce certain vitamins and minerals
  • Help digest our food into molecules that can be easily absorbed into the blood stream
  • Provide energy to the cells that line our intestinal tract
  • Produce toxins that kill bad bacteria and yeast

70% of the immune system is found in our intestinal tract and imbalances here can lead to consequences everywhere.  Dysbiosis may be the root cause of many conditions such as:

  • Constipation
  • Antibiotic associated diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Eczema
  • Autoimmune disorders (Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis)
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis
  • Yeast Infections

Proboitics or “good bacteria” have also been shown to boost the immune system and prevent upper respiratory infections.  Numerous studies have shown that children to consume probiotics on a regular basis have less colds, flu, and ear infections.

The good news is that if you feel that you have an imbalance between good bacteria quality probiotics can help.  Probiotics are supplements that provide good bacteria.

Not all probiotic supplements are created equal.  That’s right.   Probiotics are evaluated by 2 separate criteria:

  • Amount of live bacteria per capsule
    • Probiotic supplements are not measured in mg or mcg, rather in CFUs (Colony Forming Units)
    • The higher the better
  • Types of bacteria in the capsule
    • Unless used for a specific disease state or condition the more different strains of good bacteria present in each capsule the better

Colony Forming Units (CFUs) are the number represents the number of live bacteria cells per capsule.  The higher this number the better the probiotic supplement

Many companies list the CFUs that are present at the time of manufacturing

Because these are live cells if they are not shipped and stored properly…THEY WILL DIE off and the amount present when you take them is no where near what is stated on the label.

CFUs are guaranteed for the entire shelf life of the bottle.

Various strains of bacteria

Typically the more variety of strains of bacteria in the bottle the better the probiotic

This is because there are thousands of different types of good bacteria that line our GI tract and products that contain multiple strains more closely resemble that environment.

One Wellness Place Probiotics contain 5 different strains of bacteria (15 billion per serving) that have scientific evidence backing their use
