Pear Shaped Body and Weight Loss

Where is your weight?  Do you carry your weight in your hips and thighs, around your mid section, all over?  These questions are very important because where you carry your weight is just as important as how much weight you are trying to loose.

While reducing the number of calories that you consume and increasing your physical activity will result in weight loss, certain problem areas often times have to be addressed individually.

Pear shaped body types or weight gain that is found around the hips and thighs is typically due to hormonal imbalances, especially TOO much estrogen. Estrogen causes the growth of fat tissue and fat tissue produces large amounts of estrogen.  This viscous cycle leads to weight being deposited around the hips and thighs.


Estrogen is all around us.  It is found in:

  • Oral Contraceptives (birth control pills)
  • Hormone replacement therapy for menopause
  • Meat (chicken, cows, and pigs are often times fed estrogen to increase their weight)

Besides weight gain in the hips and thighs other symptoms of too much estrogen include:

  • Mood swings, irritability, insomnia
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headaches
  • Fluid retention
  • PMS

For individuals with weight gain around the hips and thighs reducing the estrogen load is a MUST for effective weight loss.  Your estrogen load can be reduced in the following ways:

  • Diet
  • Nutritional Supplements
  • Balancing your hormones

Diet & Estrogen Load

In addition to the low carbohydrate diet that One Wellness Place recommends; if estrogen load is contributing to weight gain around the hips and thighs you should consume a high amount of cruciferous vegetables.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and water cress contain high amounts of D.I.M. (diindolylmethane) which helps the liver metabolize estrogen.  D.I.M.  is also available as a nutritional supplement.

The quicker estrogen is metabolized means the faster it is eliminated from the body resulting in less estrogen load.

Other diet considerations include eating organic foods when ever possible.  Remember that non organic animals are often times fed antibiotics, hormones, and other chemicals.  These products ultimately make it into our bodies.  Organic foods are pesticide, antibiotic, and hormone (estrogen) free which will ultimately reduce your estrogen load.

Hormones & Estrogen Load

Remember, estrogen causes weight gain, and fat tissue in turn, produces more estrogen. The vicious cycle of hormones and weight gain begins.  The hormone progesterone breaks this cycle by reducing the amount of estrogen the body needs.  Less estrogen means less weight gain.

Birth control pills contain high amounts of estrogen and synthetic progesterone.  The ideal way to reduce estrogen load from birth control pills is to STOP using them.

If you are using birth control pills for PMS, or cycle regulation you should consider bio identical hormone replacement therapy (bio identical progesterone).

If you are using birth control pills for “BIRTH CONTROL” consider non hormonal forms of birth control.

If these are not a viable options ask your physician for birth control pills that have a low amount of estrogen or those products that contain progestins only.

Menopausal therapy typically consists of synthetic estrogens and progesterone.  Many women that have had a hysterectomy will not be prescribed any progesterone; therefore increasing their estrogen load.  BHRT
