Metabolic Syndrome (Syndrome X)

Metabolic Syndrome or Syndrome X is a combination of health conditions that can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease or stroke. These disorders are as follows:

  • Insulin resistance (pre – diabetes)
  • Abdominal obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Abnormalities in blood clotting
  • Cholesterol problems

Metabolic Syndrome Criteria / Risk Factors

  • Waist Circumference: Greater than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women
  • Triglycerides: Greater than 150 mg / dl
  • HDL: Less than 40 for men and 50 for women
  • Blood Pressure: Greater than 130 / 85
  • Blood Sugar: Fasting blood sugar greater than 100 mg / dl

Any 3 of the above symptoms may indicate that you have Metabolic Syndrome and could increase your risk for heart disease, heart attacks and premature death.

Heart Disease – Heart Attack – Stroke – Alzheimer’s Disease: Homocysteine and C-reactive Protein’s Role

Homocyteine is the by-product of the metabolism of the amino acid cysteine. Cysteine is an amino acid that is very high in animal proteins. Ideally, homocysteine levels should be below 9 micromoles / liter.

Diets that are high in saturated animal fat increase the amount of cysteine in a person’s blood. As a result, this also increases the homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is TOXIC, and if not eliminated properly, can increase the risk of heart disease / heart attacks, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease. Although diet and genetics influence homocysteine levels, you can easily reduce these levels by taking proper precautions.

Reduce the amount of animal fat you consume: If there is less cysteine (from animal fat consumed), there will be less homocysteine.Increase your intake of B-Vitamins: Vitamins B6, B12 and Folic Acid are essential.

B – Vitamin / Vitamin Depletion Factors

  • Folic Acid: Estrogen (birth control & HRT), Theophylline, and Phenobarbital; Some individuals may lack the necessary enzymes that convert folic acid to its active form methylfolate
  • B6: Cooking inactivates B6
  • B12: Vegetarians are often times deficient in Vitamin B12

C – Reactive Protein is found in the blood and is a marker for acute inflammation.

Infections and long-term diseases can increase C – Reactive Protein levels in your body. It is important to understand that C – Reactive Protein is a marker for the total amount of inflammation that is in your body.

It is not specific to a particular organ or system, meaning that it cannot tell you if the inflammation is from arthritis or from the blood vessels.

Many studies are correlating C – Reactive Protein with cardiovascular risk. These studies are now showing that C – Reactive Protein is just as helpful in predicting risks for heart disease or heart attacks as cholesterol levels.

C – Reactive Protein can help determine heart disease risk in individuals with undetected heart disease as well as the risk of complications for those individuals who have already experienced a heart event.

C – Reactive Protein Level / Heart Disease Risk

  • < 1.0 mg / L: Low Risk
  • 1.0 – 2.9 mg / L: Intermediate Risk
  • > 3.0 mg / L: High Risk

To reduce the C – Reactive Protein in your body, you will need to reduce inflammation. This can be done by increasing the fiber in your diet as well as Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Low levels of Vitamin B6 are also an indicator of high levels of C – Reactive Protein in your body.

Heart Facts – What You May Not Know

  • Did you know that 50 % of people that have heart attacks DON’T have high cholesterol?
  • Did you know that there are other risk factors for heart disease that are just as important as blood pressure and cholesterol?
  • Did you know that if you fit the criteria for Metabolic Syndrome or Syndrome X you are at an increased risk for heart disease, heart attacks, and premature death?
