Vitamin D can help with ASTHMA!!!!

Studies are now showing that low levels of Vitamin D are linked to asthma as well as poor response to asthma medications.

  • The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology reported that pregnant mothers who had higher levels of Vitamin D could reduce the risk of their children having asthma by almost 40%.
  • Another study found that in children who use inhaled corticosteroid (Advair, Dulera, Symbicort, Flovent, etc.) had poorer lung function when their Vitamin D levels were low versus when their Vitamin D levels were in the adequate range.
  • A study looking at children in Peurto Rico found that Vitamin D insufficiency was associated with severe asthma attacks.
  • Another study looking at school aged children showed that children that consumed 1,200 IU of Vitamin D on daily basis were 42% less likely to get a cold or the flu and those children that had asthma had a 17% less chance of having an asthma attack.

Asthma is a chronic disorder that causes the airways of the lungs to swell and narrow.  This narrowing of the lungs leads to wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.

Asthma is a very common chronic disorder in childhood; in fact an estimated 7.1 million children are diagnosed with asthma; of which 4.1 million suffered from an asthma attack or episode in 2009.

Asthma is the third leading cause of hospitalization among children under the age of 15.
