Can Vitamin C Help Fight the Invincible Common Cold and Flu? 12/07/10

The effect of Vitamin C on the immune system is a complex issue that involves many of the immune cells in our bodies.  T-lymphocyte activity, phagocyte function, leukocyte mobility, and possibly antibody and interferon production all seem to be increased by vitamin C.

In fact, Vitamin C levels are 100 times higher in immune cells like phagocytes and lymphocytes than in the blood.  Some researches believe that supplementing Vitamin C is beneficial because Vitamin C levels decrease in our white blood cells (immune cells) at the beginning of a cold.

Immune System CollageVitamin C is involved in a variety of metabolic processes such as carbohydrate metabolism, cellular respiration, and more. Vitamin C is probably most known for its potent anti-oxidant activity and its ability to boost the immune system.

Vitamin C - Citrus Fruit BundleVitamin C or ascorbic acid is a water soluble vitamin. While many other animals can produce Vitamin C on their own, humans must obtain Vitamin C from the diet.  The foods with the highest concentration of Vitamin C are your fresh fruits and vegetables, with citrus fruits being packed with Vitamin C.  Vitamin C is very sensitive to heat and cooking typically destroys all of the Vitamin C that is found in food.

Vitamin C & THE COMMON COLD

Research has shown that Vitamin C can reduce the severity, duration, and in some cases even prevent colds and the flu.  Studies prove that individuals that consumed Vitamin C on a regular basis experienced less “at home” days, which indicates that they were not as sick due to their cold and that they could still report to work or school.

The length of a cold can also be reduced by consuming Vitamin C.  Adults and children both are sick for a shorter period of time when they consume Vitamin C on a regular basis.

While studies on actually preventing the cold with Vitamin C are somewhat controversial it is know that those individuals that work or perform strenuous activities outside (athletes, football players, for example) will have a 50% less chance of coming down with a cold if they consume Vitamin C on a regular basis.

Vitamin C & THE FLU

While the cold and the Flu may have many of the same symptoms they are completely different.  Colds are typically caused by the rhinovirus or the coronavirus; however they can be caused by more than 100 different viruses.  Colds are typically mild and self limiting.  Currently there is no vaccine for the common cold.

The Flu is caused by 3 viruses (Influenza A, B, and H1N1).  The Flu is typically more virulent and results in more missed days from school and work.  The Flu also leads to more complications such as pneumonia and is responsible for 36,000 deaths each year.

Unlike the common cold every year vaccine for the Flu are manufactured.   Many people cannot tolerate the Influenza vaccine (the “Flu Shot”) for a variety of reasons.  The influenza vaccine is made from chicken eggs, so those people that are allergic to eggs or are strict vegans (consume NO animal products) should not take the “Flu Shot”. Also many people just do not feel that the “Flu Shot” is safe and would like alternative to preventing the Flu.

Vitamin C can also help with the Flu.  In one trial individuals that consumed Vitamin C on a regular basis were significantly less likely to have symptoms due to the cold or the Flu and were significantly less like to be treated with decongestants and pain relievers.

In another study individuals that actually had the Flu and consumed Vitamin C on a regular basis spent significantly less days in the hospital and were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with pneumonia.

Vitamin C is a great way to boost the immune system, increase your energy, and is a potent anti – oxidant.  Consuming Vitamin C on a regular basis may help prevent the common cold, decrease the severity as well as decrease the duration of the illness.

Other nutritional Supplements that have been shown to boost your immune system are Vitamin D and N – Acetylcysteine.
