Vitamin D in the News - December 2010 - Washington Post

With over 20 years pharmaceutical and nutrition experience, Scott’s Pharmacy feels confident in presenting the following response to the article by Lauren Neergaard (Associated Press):

1.  That Vitamin D deficiency is a real problem in the United States

2.  That higher doses of are safe and have been used in clinical trials with good results

First Let Us Look at Vitamin D Status Among North Americans.

Many laboratories state that Vitamin D levels should be between 30 – 74 (some cases 100) ng / ml.

The Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) which is a survey designed to evaluate the nutritional status of Americans found:

Between 1988 – 1994 the average serum Vitamin D level was 30 ng / ml (based on 18,883 participants)

Between 2001 – 2004 the average serum Vitamin D level decreased to 24 ng / ml (based on 13,369 participants)

This survey also found that during this same time period the amount of individuals with Vitamin D levels below 10 increased while the amount of individuals with Vitamin D levels above 30 decreased.

Many studies have shown that African Americans have even lower Vitamin D levels.

This shows that the average American is Vitamin D deficient and the trend is towards extremely deficient.

Secondly, Let Us Look at Research which shows Higher Levels of Vitamin D are Not Only Safe but Provides Protection Against the Common Cold and Flu; Maybe Even Asthma.

A study published in Epidemiology and Infection found that African American post menopausal women who consumed 2,000 IU of Vitamin D a day experienced significantly less colds and flu when compared to those women that did not consume Vitamin D over the course of 3 years.  No significant adverse events were reported.

This year (2010) The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that school aged children that consumed 1,200 IU of Vitamin D had significantly less episodes of the Flu then those children that did not take vitamin D.  And in those children that had a previous diagnosis of asthma – the children in the Vitamin D group had significantly less asthma attacks.  No significant adverse events were reported in this study.

Some Research Shows that to Increase Vitamin D Level by 1 Point, You Need to Consume 100 IU of Vitamin D.

For Example:

Optimal Vitamin D Level                       75 ng /ml

Your Measured Vitamin D Level           25 ng / ml

Need to Increase Vitamin D By            50 ng / ml

A good start would be to consume 5,000 IU of Vitamin D.  I would suggest consuming this amount for about 3 months and then rechecking your Vitamin D. Levels.

It is also very important to remember that you CAN measure your Vitamin D levels and supplement yourself with Vitamin D until you reach the optimal goal, with many wellness practioners recommending Vitamin D levels of 60 – 80ng/ml for optimal health.
