Fish Oil & Your Joints 05/16/14

Jun_20_2013-03_03_48-fish-oil.jpgAs a pharmacist people ask me all the time what is better; Tylenol, Advil, or Aleve?

By now we have all seen the commercials about which is better for arthritis pain Tylenol or Aleve?  While both medications are good for symptomatic pain relief from arthritis they both have their side effects.

Aleve is typically taken once a twice a day and a lot of people like it for this reason.  Aleve belongs to a class of drugs known as NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) ; however, these drugs can be harsh on the kidneys and should not be used in people with kidney problems.  Aleve can also cause stomach ulcers that can lead to life threatening bleeding from the intestinal tract.  Other drugs that are in the same class or are closely related to Aleve include, ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, indomethacin,  Celebrex, and Motrin

While Tylenol has no effect on the kidneys it is typically taken 4 to 5 times out of the day and it is very toxic to the liver.  People who have liver issues or those who are on multiple medications that can affect the liver should refrain from taking Tylenol.

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to achieve pain relief without the toxic effects that come with NSAIDs, like Aleve and other products like Tylenol?

If you have ever read any of articles or seen me speak you know that I believe fish oil is the foundation to any wellness program.  In, fact I often times say if you are going to take one supplement, it better be fish oil.

The omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil have been shown to help promote:

·         Healthy Blood Pressure

·         Healthy Cholesterol

·         Healthy Eyesight

·         And more

The benefits of fish oil don’t stop there. Fish Oils are also great at improving joint mobility.  The omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil are converted in you body to be POWERFUL anti-inflammatory components.

Inflammation is the first step in the body’s complex healing process.  Short term inflammation is good because it alerts our body to injury and sickness and often results in pain, which tells us – HEY, you better get this looked at.

Long term inflammation however, is harmful and can lead to chronic joint pain, increase risk for other diseases, heart attacks, and strokes.

Fish Oil is a great way to reduce inflammation naturally and by reducing inflammation fish oil has been shown to improve joint mobility and decrease the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

One study looked at people with Rheumatoid Arthritis, a debilitating auto immune disease that is characterized by intense inflammation of the joints. The study evaluated 2 groups the first group took Aleve by itself; while the second group to Aleve plus fish oil.  The study showed that those people who took fish oil needed less Aleve to control their pain and improve their joint mobility.

Remember because fish oil does more than just help with arthritis those people in the study may also have seen better blood pressure and cholesterol control as well.

Not all fish oil is the same and if not manufactured correctly may contain unwanted toxins and may contain oils that have been broken down into trans fatty acids.

One Wellness Place Fish Oil is

·         Pharmaceutical Grade

·         Ultra Purified

·         Fresh Caught
